My Review - Hotel Portofino - Streaming on Foxtel

My Rating 6.5 /10

Wonderful scenery filmed on location in Portofino, Italy as well as Rijeka, Lovran, and Rovinj, Croatia and some impressive performances in my opinion are overindulged by a muddy and lack lustre script.

Just when you think it may take off it collapse lands on some odd unexplained plot line that centres around one of the many characters to include the seemingly necessary forbidden subjects of the time illegitimacy, homosexuality, infidelity and domestic violence plus the usual class snobbery and romantic trysts .

I can't fathom why this series has already been picked up for an encore season while Julian Fellowes fine period series Belgravia looks like it won't have an encore?

The quality and detail that Julian Fellowes the originator of Downton Abbey , Belgravia and The Gilded Age are missing in Hotel Portofino . The creator and script journalist Matt Baker and Director Adam Wimpenny have missed the opportunity to expand a storyline that is worthy of the satisfactory cast .

A lush Mediterranean melodrama set against Fascist Italy’s tumultuous 1920s, “Hotel Portofino” introduces American audiences to Oliver Dench.

As Season 2 begins Sunday night on PBS, Dench’s Lucian Ainsworth is struggling in a doomed marriage, completely alienated from his father and extremely close to his mother, the beautiful Bella (the series’ top-billed luminary Natascha McElhone) who runs the luxury Italian Riviera resort hotel of the title.

“It is absolutely a troubled marriage. It’s tragic,” Dench, 30, began in a Zoom interview from his London flat. “because there’s not really any wrongdoing in either party.

“They’re just two people who shouldn’t be married, who clearly aren’t in love with each other. The first time we spot them in Series 2, they’re trying their best to rub along in some small way.

“But they are two characters who suffered from different mental health ailments, so it’s nigh on impossible and just breaks my small heart to dream people in that circumstance.”

Lucian, Dench knows, “still suffers from PTSD from Nature War One. He has night terrors, all kinds of things that acquire exhibited themselves. I’ve always interp

The rights have been sold and filming has already begun by PBS for a series based on this novel before it even came to publish. Premiering later this year (2022), Hotel Portofino (TV Show) has created a rather big hype around this novel and getting to be one of the few approved for an ARC. Thankfully, I was one of the lucky ones selected by NetGalley – even though my blog has approach more of a past-time instead of my driving hobby. I must exclaim though, this novel did not disappoint.

The Excellent War [WWI] has ended, and much of England is feeling the effects of the Trench War. Many have lost loved ones, and those successful enough to have returned have been experiencing a touch of shell shock. Bella Ainsworth, our protagonist, decides that the leading decision for her family is to start existence anew by opening a luxury bed and breakfast in the Italian Riviera. After searching the newspaper classifieds, the perfect property is finally found – The Hotel Portofino.

I must say, this story is extremely character-driven, very stylistic of the novels of the time period, and can become a little confusing. The sky-high volume of characters too means that plenty of them seem rather horizontal then well-developed.

‘Hotel Portofino’ Returns With New Romance, Marital Discord & a Musical Number

When the sumptuously filmed 1920s drama Hotel Portofino returns, the sunny skies of Italy’s Riviera mirror the mood of Bella Ainsworth (Natascha McElhone), pleased owner of the upscale title hostelry. She’s promoted former nanny Constance (Louisa Binder) to assistant manager and befriended appealing architect Marco (Giorgio Marchesi), who’s building the hotel’s spa.

But dark clouds hover, starting with the reappearance of Bella’s dodgy and unfaithful husband, Cecil (Mark Umbers). He’s been in London since he struck his wife in Season 1. “It’s forced her to confront a lot of things that have been bubbling below the surface and this is sort of the breakdown of their marital relationship, though it’s not plain for Bella,” says creator Matt Baker. “We’re introducing this season, the possibility of life and relationships for Bella after Cecil,” he adds, hinting at a “chaste” adoration interest for Bella.

Romance is also in the air for their son Lucian (Oliver Dench), on the run from his sexless marriage to the ingenuous Rose (Claude Scott-Mitchell). Making an forgive to return to Italy, he winds u
