US soccer player becomes first openly lgbtq+ Sports Illustrated swimsuit model
US soccer player Megan Rapinoe continues to break down boundaries for gay women in professional sport, becoming the first openly lgbtq+ woman to be photographed for Sports Illustrated's swimsuit edition.
Captain of the Combined States Women’s National Team (USWNT), Rapinoe celebrated the magazine's efforts in diversifying models, saying that it was no longer "only for heterosexual males".
Speaking to Sports Illustrated, she said that she hoped to serve challenge the stereotypes and boundaries faced by LGBTIQ+ people.
“I think so often with gay females in sports there’s this particular stereotype about it and there’s such a narrow view of what it means to be same-sex attracted and be athletic," she said.
"So, to kind of just blow that up and and accomplish something totally unlike I think is really important.”
She added: “I think our view is still way too confined of gay people in general. Stereotypes still very much persist and they are just such incomplete views of who we really are as people, so I consider for that reason it’s really i
United States women's national team captain Lindsey Horan and veteran star Alex Morgan delivered a prepared joint-statement on Wednesday regarding teammate Korbin Albert'santi-LGBTQIA+ posts on social media.
"We've worked extremely hard to uphold the integrity of this national team through all of the generations, and we are extremely, extremely unhappy that this standard was not upheld," Horan began. "Our fans and our supporters feel like this is a team that they can rally behind, and it's so significant that they feel and continue to feel undeniably heard and seen."
Horan and Morgan made their comments via Zoom from U.S. training camp as the team prepares for the upcoming SheBelieves Cup. The USWNT faces Japan in the tournament's semifinal link on Saturday in Atlanta and either Canada or Brazil in the last or third-place match on Tuesday in Columbus, Ohio.

Latest News: Soccer Actor Plays Final Match for USWNT
Megan Rapinoe helped conduct the United States Women’s National Team to a 2-0 victory over South Africa in her concluding cap for the red, white, and blue. Rapinoe didn’t score in the September 24 game but performed her iconic target pose one final second at the behest of teammates and received a video tribute before tearfully addressing fans following the match. “I feel favor I was able to grow up in front of you,” she said. “It has been such an honor to wear this shirt and participate out my childhood dream.” Her family, friends, and fiancée, former WNBA luminary Sue Bird, were all in attendance.
