I am wondering whether you might be able to advise if my spouse and I are victims of discrimination.

I am a gay man in a relationship, my boyfriend and I have decided to get a place together. We applied for a flat through a local agent, it was flawless for our needs so we were very thrilled when our references passed and the landlady said she was happy for us to move in.

A few days later we were extremely disappointed and angry when we were told that our application had been declined by the building management because there is a policy against cohabiting men (and also cohabiting women). We asked them why and if they would reconsider but they said that rules are rules.

Supreme Court Declines Landlord Question in Major Victory for Rent Stabilization in Recent York

In a significant victory for rent stabilization in New York, the U.S. Supreme Court denied certiorari in two more rent-stabilization cases that Selendy Gay has been litigating alongside The Legal Aid Society and Legal Services NYC since 2019. The decisions leave in place the Second Circuit’s assessments affirming the dismissals of Takings Clause and other constitutional challenges to the rent-stabilization regime in Fresh York by three groups of landlords and landlord associations.

Rent stabilization, which has existed in some form or another in New York for a century, protects tenants in about a million apartments in NYC (half the city’s rental housing stock) and tens of thousands of apartments across the state. The laws and regulations protect tenants against rent shocks and unjustified evictions, while allowing landlords to make reasonable returns, evict unsatisfactory tenants, or exit the rental market altogether through various means.

Landlord accused of barring queer renters from viewings

A would-be student tenant has accused a landlord of making homophobic rules before agreeing to a house viewing.

Posting on the discussion platform Reddit, the tenant explains that he received a private message (main image, inset) after responding to an advert on a large student accommodation agency site, about the two-bedroom property in Canterbury (main image).

In the message, the landlord, who says he lives abroad, asks: “Could you first let me comprehend a bit about yourself and your partner who would be sharing with you: your nationalities, ages, occupations, your interests, lifestyles and so on? Please note that, as per the adverts, we will only consider male-female couples. If this isn’t the case with you, then I’m afraid we couldn’t take this further.”
