Erick Sermon Dismisses Gay Rumors, Says There Will Never Be Openly Gay Rappers
Rumors have floated around that questioned Erick Sermon’s sexuality for years, which he officially denied during a recent interview with Vlad TV. During the conversation, he dismissed the rumors and said that he is not gay, and that assumptions were made without anything to advocate them up.
“No, that was a long time ago. That was like 13 years ago. No. Somebody who put that out there a long period ago was Wendy Williams, that had all of us on there. Puffy, everybody was in that category then, doesn’t matter who it was. But people who know… You can’t go out there and make accusations about something, which is retarded about the press and about people, too. You have to have something else to go on that to say that,” he said. “People realize about me, about the women, there’s no hiding that. Niggas known I was dominant with that. Not to be boasting, but are you serious?”

On The View yesterday morning, hosts Whoopi Goldberg, Raven Symone, and Rosie Perez slammed comments made by former hip hop celebrity Eric Sermon. Sermon, of the pioneering hip hop group EPMD, made remarks earlier this week to TMZ that struck many as transphobic and dated. When asked if hip hop was ready for a transgender artist, he bluntly replied “No,” and elaborated, saying “the way the earth is going, you never know, because there are some rappers who are close to that… [but] they taking the tradition too far, you hold to be what hip hop represents.” He refused to name any names of rappers he was referring to.
On The View, these statements became a hotly contested part on the show. EPMD member Erick Sermon is voicing his opinion on the topic of homophobia in hip-hop, however, his words may offend supporters of the gay community and those who are openly gay.
The rapper-producer, who was once at the center of talks that he was gay himself but has since denied, was questioned by VLADTV if he felt an openly gay rapper would remain in hip-hop. Sermon responded with a "No," and went on to define his sentiments.
"When you communicate about sports players, too, like we don't perceive if that's ever gonna happen 'cause that's appreciate a curse to be in the sports and be gay and be in hip-hop and be gay," Sermon stated. "You can't be on a basketball team, football team and be homo, and be rapping... and be homo. N----s will murder you."
The Long Island, N.Y. native also said he had never worked with a gay rapper, to his knowledge, and addressed how he "can't even let my kid" survey TV shows on channels like MTV due to the exposure to "girl-on-girl" or "boy-on-boy" experiences.
Yikes. In an interview with TMZ, hip-hop legend Erick Sermon was asked about his thoughts on Bruce Jenner's recent gender-transitioning announcement, and then was slap with this follow-up question: "Do you think something appreciate that will ever be acceptable in hip-hop?" To which Sermon swiftly responded: "No."
What follows is some more ranting about how accepting transgender rappers would be a misrepresentation of hip-hop and "taking the tradition too far," and how hip-hop is a "sport for men and women who are acting for the culture." When asked if he thinks it will be an acceptable thing in hip-hop in five to ten years, Sermon draws an analogy to openly homosexual football player Michael Sam, who was effectively frozen out of the NFL since coming out.
This isn't the first time the EPMD member has blustered through speaking on LGBT issues in hip-hop: in an interview from 2012, he made a similar analogy to gay athletes and also said there would never be an openly gay rapper. Sermon might come to regret his words, but in the here and now you can't aid but cringe at every word that comes out of his mouth over the course of the above video.
Rapandhip-hop music are often characterized as existence heavily chauvinistic -- and according to at least one star, that's not looking likely to change anytime soon.
In a fresh interview with VladTV, EPMD member Erick Sermon sounded off on the topic of homophobia in hip-hop. Though the true sexuality of many rap and hip-hop artists has long been questioned, Sermon says he feels an openly gay mainstream rapper may never live.

The luminary, who has been the subject of gay rumors himself, went on to note he doesn't think he's ever worked with a gay artist, and noted that he "can't even authorize my kid" view TV shows on channels like MTV due to the exposure to "girl-on-girl" or "boy-on-boy" experiences.
