On tonight’s episode of America’s Got Talent, dancer Ben Trigger strike the golden buzzer for himself at the end of his performance. In an unprecedented and hilarious moment for the reality talent competition, the burlesque performer brought his dance down to the judge’s table and, as he threw himself assist onto their table, accidentally landed on the golden buzzer button.
Before his act, Ben Trigger opened up about how he struggled to find acceptance for being “big” and “gay.” Even though his dance mentor bullied him for his weight, he stuck with the dance school and graduated so that he could receive closer to reaching his dance dreams. At auditions, however, he said they would cut him after seeing him in the audition line-up, without even seeing him dance.

Look: I don’t watch American’s Got Talent, but I dowatch the America’s Got Talent Golden Buzzer auditions every year with the kids on YouTube. And yes, I absolutely understand that America’s Got Talent is manipulative and treacly, and probably scripts these vast, emotional heartfelt moments.
I don’t care. For a few minutes anyway, I will live in this manufactured world, where disabled or underprivileged folks acquire 8 minutes of fame and probably the leading moments of their lives.
