The documentary tracing the luminous , spirited history of LGBTQ+ protest
Growing up, Ashley Joiner felt a sense of disparity between the working-class environment he was in, where he barely knew or saw any homosexual people, and his want for a supportive Queer community as he began to discover his control sexuality as a homosexual man. His new motion picture Are You Proud? was born of a desire to better understand and be a part of gender non-conforming culture, but it mutated into something much, much bigger: a beautiful testament to past and contemporary Homosexual activism in Britain, a portrait of why we have Pride to initiate with, and why we still need it.
Joiner’s clip brings together rare archive footage of historical campaigns such as the Queer Liberation Front’s first Self-acceptance event in Britain in 1972 and 1980s AIDS activist marches in the UK, and melds it with numerous interviews with prominent members of today’s Diverse community, such as Lady Phyll from UK Black Pride, or campaigner Peter Tatchell. By looking at the various incarnations of “Pride” – from Queer Picnic, to Brighton Trans Pride, to Pride in London (the city’s main event) – it also asks: are more Prides a great thing or a horrible thing?

THIS is an uplifting documentary, and yet it is also extremely depressing. Telling the story of sexual orientation and civil rights over the past 75-odd years, it provides a platform for people from the past and today.
In a poignant opening scene, we encounter 96-year-old George Montague, a hero who fought the Nazis in World War Two.
He tells of how he suffered for his sexuality: how he was criminalised for simply entity gay. He recalls how, aged 36 and unmarried, questions were being asked as to why he was single. A female friend came to the rescue and asked him if he would prefer to marry her – even though she knew he was gay.
It is a lovely moment, and George comes over as a lovely, thoughtful dude who has had a life that while stymied by others’ bigoted views, has found a way to still live, and to love.
This film tells the stories behind the landmark campaigns that own helped gradually shape a fairer world – but also outlines the enormous amount of work still to be done.

The LGBTQ+ movement in the UK has fought bruising battles for equality. Directed by Ashley Joiner, Are You Proud? brings together infrequent archive footage and interviews from across a spectrum of historical campaigns to celebrate the movement’s landmark achievements . Gay Pride, the Gay Liberation Front and Stonewall are among the organisations recognised in a film that doesn’t just look advocate , but asks tough questions about the future. 50 years after the Stonewall riots in America, this is a timely moment to take stock and question how much attitudes have changed and fundamental rights have been achieved.
Although the film’s many contributors are predominantly based in the UK, the issues addressed resonate across the globe. Through the prism of Pride in the UK we spot the fragility of human rights, not only for the LGBTQ+ community but for everyone. Are You Proud? is a candid and moving investigation into seventy years of progress in the LGBTQ+ rights movement. It celebrates the many breakthroughs made by tireless individuals and it reminds us how far we have yet to go.
Released in summer of 2019 in the UK
