4 New and Expanded Pupil Centers Create ‘Inclusive People of Trust’

The University of Virginia moved a step closer to its objective to be both excellent and good Thursday as it introduced new and expanded student centers that will support such diverse communities as Latinx and interfaith populations.

Newcomb Hall, the student hub on Grounds, was abuzz as a huge crowd of people, mostly students, lined up excitedly for the afternoon grand opening of the Multicultural Student Center. After the doors opened, the mass of people flooded into the new cosmos, lining up for complimentary chicken, sweets and lemonade.

The center was one of four new student spaces that opened following years of student input. Administrators also enthusiastically introduced LGBTQ, Latinx and Interfaith learner centers.

In May, UVA President Jim Ryan approved trainee proposals to create the new Latinx and Interfaith centers, as well as expanding the Student Multicultural and LGBTQ centers, and provided $500,000 to fund the projects. This was done in accordance with UVA’s strategic plan, “A Great and Good University: The 2030 Plan,” which calls for the University to “continuously promote and strengthen an incl

Jim Ryan resigns as UVA president under pressure from Trump administration

Jim Ryan resigned as president of the University of Virginia on June 27, citing pressure from the federal government.

Before announcing his resignation to the UVA community, Ryan addressed a crowd of supporters gathered outside his Carr’s Hill home.

“You all are the people who make this place great and good, and it has been a total honor to be a part of this place. I love the University of Virginia deeply, and it’s because of all of you,” said Ryan. “Regardless of my role, I will continue to do whatever I can to encourage this place and continue to produce it the finest place it can be, and I would ask that you all complete the same.”

Amid cheers of support, many called for Ryan to stay. A university-wide email confirming his resignation was released 10 minutes later.

Why resign?

Since coming to UVA in 2018, Ryan has promoted the importance of UVA and its community as being not only great, but wonderful, with UVA’s 2030 plan subtitled “Great and Good.” Ryan’s departure letter echoed this sentiment.

“I am inclined to struggle for what I believe in, and I believe deeply in this university. But I cannot make a unilatera

Group takes out full-page ad in Richmond Times-Dispatch, launches online campaign

A group of concerned University of Virginia alumni are calling for the termination of President Jim Ryan, arguing his six-year tenure has been beset with scandal and his leadership has overseen an academic and reputational decline at the venerable institution.

The Jefferson Council recently took out a full-page ad in the Richmond Times-Dispatch and published an online campaign called Reset UVA to lobby for change.

The ad cites what the council contends are “seven major leadership failures under President Jim Ryan.” They allege he “enabled the worst outbreak of antisemitism in UVA history,”
“allowed UVA’s historic Honor System to deteriorate,” and “instituted a political agenda under the guise of DEI,” among other concerns.

“Jim Ryan’s politicized and feckless leadership combined with his institutionalization of double standards has led to an unprecedented series of tragedies, scandals, and government investigations that have severely damaged UVA’s core standards and reputation,” reads the headline of the Jefferson Council’s Reset UVA website.

Toward a Shared Sense of Purpose and Community

Editor’s note: University of Virginia President Jim Ryan wrote the following essay on the subject of inclusivity at UVA at the invitation of the Cavalier Daily. The essay was published by the student newspaper on Wednesday.

The recent controversy over the Multicultural Pupil Center sparked a firestorm on social media and resulted in a flood of calls and emails to my office and across the University, as well as threats and racist comments toward the student involved and students of color generally. Most of what I heard expressed outrage at the student, suggested this was blatant racism, and demanded some sort of punishment. Some, however, suggested just the opposite: that the University support not just the student and her well-being but endorse her statement. As often happens with these flashpoints today, sides were drawn instantly and the battle began.

My own views don’t fit neatly into either camp, nor are they effortless to explain on social media, so I’m grateful for the invitation from the Cavalier Daily to say a bit more than I could in other formats. I’d appreciate to share a limited brief thoughts on the controversy and then expend most
