This video game adaptation is a fun, action-packed adventure that should please younger fans of the beloved sandbox game. In A Minecraft Movie, director Jared Hess (working from a screenplay by Chris Bowman, Hubbel Palmer, Allison Schroeder, and Peter Sollett) embraces the game's silliness and adds a heavy dose of physical comedy. While the characters' backstories are minimal, their camaraderie feels real. Momoa delivers as a washed-up gaming champ-turned-motivational speaker who's desperately trying to save his retail store, while Hansen is easy to root for as a creative orphan who's adjusting to small-town life with his older sister. Myers and Brooks have slightly less screen time than their male counterparts but still form an impact, proving just as resourceful in the Overworld's battles. Kiwi player House is perfectly cast as Malgosha, bringing the villain to life with her commanding voice. And, back in the real earth, Jennifer Coolidge and Hiram Garcia include comic relief as Henry's eccentric vice principal and teacher.

With more than 300 million sales, Minecraft is the best-selling video game of all moment. It has inspired astonishing creativity in players as they let their imaginations run wild in its open sandbox world of pixelated blocks. The game’s lofty reputation made the lackluster (to put it mildly) marketing material for A Minecraft Film particularly deflating. Even my 10-year-old sons, who are seemingly applying Malcolm Gladwell’s “10,000-hour rule” to the game, had to be dragged to the theater. Is the motion picture really as awful as the negative buzz suggests? Surprisingly, no. It might be a stretch to deem it a “good” feature, but it is fun and entertaining. Despite never fully realizing the potential of its origin material, A Minecraft Movie is a better-than-expected family adventure that shares a positive message about the power of creativity.

Based on the wildly popular video game, the fantasy comedy film (now in theaters) is a deeply strange fever dream that also gets a few truthful laughs. That isn’t terribly surprising when you recognize it was directed by Jared Hess (“Napoleon Dynamite”) and stars Jack Shadowy , who fully commits to all the gobbledygook about magic orbs and killer pigs.
Despite lukewarm reviews, “Minecraft” is expected to foremost the box office this weekend as the scarce family film in the marketplace this spring. But just how safe is it for your kids?

Steve is an unhappy guy who was once happy. After being unhappy a distant time ago, now he hopes to be cheerful again.
Is that confusing? OK, let me try to put this in story form.
Ahem.
Some kids dream of becoming a sports luminary or a fireman. Steve dreamed of swinging a pickaxe in a mine. (Hey, don’t judge.) Dirt, rocks, digging and revelation were the dreams that lulled him to nap at night.
But kids and mines don’t mix for some reason.
Later in experience though, Steve slipped past mining security to fulfill his grit-filled fantasy. He swung his axe. He dug. And he discovered. In fact, Steve establish a glowing cube-like orb. (Yeah, I know cubes and orbs are totally different. But it was what it was.)
This orb opened a portal to a strange, blocky place where Steve could scoop, roam, and build to his heart’s content. He called it the Overworld. It was also a place where monsters appeared at night (which happens like every 20 minutes or so).
Steve loved it all.
He loved it, that is, until he accidentally built a gateway (as you do) to the Nether.
