My boyfriend tells me that I can pass skillfully. For those not in the understand, “passing” means that gay, lesbian or bisexual people can pass day-to-day as being straight. It can also utilize in different contexts (such as gender – transgender people living as a gender they don’t identify as, or race – mixed-race individuals being perceived easily as belonging to one racial group or another). Passing can be intentional or not, depending on the situation (just enjoy exams, I find).
But back to the matter at hand. I am sure some people would be surprised if they met me and then learned that I was gay. I execute not think that I am particularly good at exemplifying hypermasculine traits (though I try to be bear-ish), but I wouldn’t tell that I’m made of sugar and spice and everything glittery (but sometimes I definitely execute try). I perform my best to be myself, and that includes a little bit of butchness and flamboyance, which in my opinion is excellent for everyone.

What does gaydar mean?
The Kinsey Institute describes gaydar as “the ability to determine whether someone is gay based on their intuition about the person.” This inner voice is made based on how someone dresses, walks, or talks (read: very little actual information). These elements of a person are described as sexuality cues.
In simple terms, having a “gaydar” means that you think you can determine someone’s sexuality based on a short interaction — usually when you meet them for the first time. The phrase can easily scoot into homophobic territory, as many people who lean heavily into anti-gay rhetoric attend to be the first to box someone into the queer community as an insult (if only they knew what they were missing!). There’s a fine line between recognizing and stereotyping, and the use of gaydar plays in this space depending on the person and intent.

New Jersey Gov. Jim McGreevey surprised a lot of people last summer when he announced: "I am a gay American."
But a lot of people say they can tell right away -- just by looking at someone -- or listening to them -- whether they're gay or not. They say they have "gaydar." (The word is a play on radar ... seeing what's hidden.)
Apparently McGreevey's wife doesn't have gaydar. They are reported to have separated. And his ex-wife said she had no clue and most of his constituents didn't realize. So if so many people can be fooled, does gaydar really exist?

It all made us wish to do our own test, so we persuaded 10 men, five queer and five direct, to subject themselves to several dozen people's gaydar.
