All this week we are celebrating Seattle Pride and PrideFest 2017 by featuring all LGBTQ artists for our “Song of the Gay” podcast. Today’s Tune of the Gay is "Linda Blair" by Little Star, from their 2017 self-titled album on Wonderful Cheer Records.

Little Celestial body - Linda Blair (MP3)Little Star is a Portland-based band led by singer-songwriter Daniel Byers with Julian Morris on bass/backup vocals and Sonia Weber on drums. They recently released their self-titled second album. KEXP Music Director Don Yates described it as, “a potent blend of driving post-punk, wistful dream-pop, dynamic grunge, nervy indie-pop and more, with a variety of well-crafted songs juxtaposing buoyant melodies with anxiety-fueled lyrics”.

Julian is non-binary and Sonia is openly gay. Seattle PBS affiliate KCTS recently aired a piece about Julian’s story. Here is an excerpt:

As I read my daily dose of ‘gay news’, I came across this article about ‘Twinks’ on samesame – http://www.samesame.com.au/features/12304/Be-exactly-who-you-are – the article was written by a gay man with the pseudonym, brandycooklyn.

In the article, the writer discusses the stereotypes in the gay community. And how he loathes it.

In the essay that will accompany my film, I possess looked into the pos ‘sissyphobia’ – a synonyms that I have discovered recently. Sissyphobia is the fear/loathsome of the more effeminate gay man.

A couple of quotes from the article:

‘I am often times given the label of a gay community stereotype, one I do not personally identity with. A twink is a feminine, flamboyant young homosexual man.’

‘We have been conditioned towards treasuring masculinity and demonizing femininity in gay men. It’s something many of us have tried difficult to avoid, but inevitably collapses out if our rears at the unlikeliest of times, just when we think we’ve unlearned it. We have been also conditioned into stereotyping others, and placing them in categories. This is both a blessing

REVIEW: Twinky Twinky Little Celestial body, Adelaide Fringe 2025 ★★★★☆

Zak Vasiliou has recorded a good portion of his gay childhood, and what a goldmine he’s created! Twinky Twinky Little Star is his debut stand-up comedy hour, mining content from his childhood and marvelling at how obvious it must have been—to everyone except his parents. It’s a stroke of luck that he has such a wealth of videos and content from his younger years, and he uses it brilliantly. The recital I saw had the added bonus of his parents nodding and shaking their heads vigorously in the front row, confirming that they, indeed, had no idea he was gay. This becomes increasingly hilarious as the videos and images pile up, showing little Zak looking positively flamboyant from the word go.

Stand-up with a bit of variety is always a treat, as the format can sometimes feel one-note. But with the slideshow and video support, as well as an informative lecture on subcategories within the queer community, Zak gives off strong gay James Veitch vibes with his multimedia approach. My favourite exploit of the video footage was watching adult Zak lip-sync to his have childhood remix of Mamma Mia performed
