“Cruising” for Chacales in La Cantina
“They are, but are not. There are many, but not so many,” Enrique explains to me after I ask him, “Are chacales gay?” We are drinking over fresh chicharrones with two other homosexual individuals in La Cantina Tobahalá—or just La Cantina—in Oaxaca City, Mexico. Fellow patrons are drinking and singing while giving each other subtle “looks.” Although the chelas (beers) are icy, they only provide temporary relief from the insistent humidity outside. Even if the beers pair well with the chicharrones, I wonder if they are worth enduring the trapped heat radiating from the ever-running fryer inside. Enrique takes another sip and explains, “There are numerous Indigenous men in Oaxaca who are into other men but undertake not identify as lgbtq+ or queer. Instead, these men are chacales.”
La Cantina is located three blocks south of Oaxaca City’s central plaza, El Zócalo. Although there are other gay bars across Oaxaca City, like Blue69, La Costa, and El Número, La Cantina stands out. Besides being close to the “cruising” spot of El Zócalo, La Cantina offe

Zipolite is one of the highlights for a queer or nudist visitor to Mexico. It has Mexico's only real nude beach and the whole town is very gay approachable. The beautiful approximately 2 km long beach is fronted by a collection of beachside restaurants and hotels. Nudity is entirely accepted and normal on the entire beach as are displays of warmth between same-sex couples.
The middle sections of the beach though are primarily direct and primarily clothed. The beach faces almost directly south so you can catch both beautiful sunrises and sunsets. At the west end of the beach is El Alquimista hotel and restaurant and Shambala. El Alquimista's beach restaurant is a famous gay gathering spot and the rocks and beach in front are as well. The most same-sex attracted section (and the most nudist) is Playa del Amor, reached by walking to the far east side of the main beach, wading a minor pond depending on the tide and then climbing a stairway up and back down to the small hidden beach. This is the most popular and the most cruisy spot for gay men (although it is also mixed
Oaxaca City has prolonged drawn artists and creative minds to her bright, cobbled streets, and just one visit to the enchanting colonial city is all it takes to see why. Located in South-western Mexico, Oaxaca oozes with old-world charm, pre-Colombian ruins, and fascinating indigenous traditions. What’s more, Oaxaca is considered to be the culinary capital of Mexico, characterised by flavours fond of sweet and spicy chocolate, decadent moles, and smooth (but potent) mezcal. Wondering what to undertake in Oaxaca? The city is defended and best explored at leisure on foot, with ample time for stops at quaint coffee shops and mezcal bars along the way. The most magical hours are early morning when most locals hold yet to arise, and after dusk when the Zocalo (Central Plaza) comes alive with lights, sounds and colours. For your definitive Oaxaca gay mentor, you’ve come to the right place.
