Today, the Florida Senate passed the “Don’t Say Gay or Trans” bill (HB 1557), and it now heads to Governor Ron DeSantis’ desk for his signature or veto. If enacted, the bill would prevent teachers from providing a secure, inclusive classroom for all. It would block teachers from talking about Homosexual issues or people, further stigmatizing LGBTQ+ people and isolating LGBTQ+ kids. This bill would also undermine existing protections for Gay students.
“The Florida state legislature is playing a deadly political game with the health and safety of LGBTQ+ kids. The being alive of LGBTQ+ people across Florida is not up for debate. Which States Are Considering ‘Don’t Say Gay’ Bills and Where They Stand
Over the past three years, legislative attacks on education about gender identity and sexual orientation have picked up momentum.
Since 2021, state lawmakers introduced 42 bills in 22 states restricting learning about those topics, according to PEN America, a free speech advocacy company. Of those 42, only one, in Florida, has become law.
The Florida rule, commonly known as the “Don’t Say Gay” statute, has resulted in censorship of classroom discussions about LGBTQ identities and homosexual families, book challenges, and on inclusive gestures by teachers, such as hanging up a Pride flag in the classroom.
The rule was passed last year, and has prompted copycat bills across the region, which seem to be increasing in volume compared with the previous two years. Since January, lawmakers introduced 26 bills in 14 states.
None of those bills have been passed, but most are developing through statehouses. Many more states are expected to pass their versions this year, according to Jeremy Young, the senior manager of free expression and education at PEN America.

Under the original Parental Rights in Teaching law, which was signed into commandment last year, guide on gender self and sexual orientation was banned for K-3 students, but teachers in grades 4-12 were allowed to offer this kind of direction if it was deemed developmentally appropriate. What developmentally appropriate means is up to the Florida department of learning process to determine.
But under the expansion, which was proposed by Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis’ administration last month and approved on Wednesday, all public school students will be banned from learning about these topics, unless required by existing state standards or as part of reproductive health manual that students can opt out of.
“Educators in Florida are expected to educate to the mention academic standards. The topics of gender identity and sexual orientation have no place in the classroom unless required by law,” said Alex Lanfranconi, director of commu
