Sexual Orientation

Adolescence is the dawn of sexual attraction. It happens due to the hormonal changes of puberty. These changes involve both the body and the mind — so just thinking about someone attractive can cause physical arousal.

These new feelings can be intense, confusing, sometimes even overwhelming. Teens are origin to discover what it means to be attracted romantically and physically to others. And recognizing one's sexual orientation is part of that process.

What Is Sexual Orientation?

The term sexual orientation refers to the gender (that is, male or female) to which a person is attracted. There are several types of sexual orientation that are commonly described:

  • Heterosexual (straight). People who are heterosexual are romantically and physically attracted to members of the opposite sex: males are attracted to females, and females are attracted to males. Heterosexuals are often called "straight."
  • Homosexual (gay or lesbian). People who are homosexual are romantically and physically attracted to people of the alike sex: females are attracted to other females; males are attracted to other males. Homosexuals (whether male or female) are often called "gay.

    Evidence suggests that LGBTQ+ children and young people might be at increased risk of some forms of harm.

    Child sexual exploitation

    LGBTQ+ relationships are underrepresented in educational resources and the media (Barnardo’s and Fox, 2016). This means there are fewer examples of relevant, well relationships available to LGBTQ+ young people. If LGBTQ+ fresh people are not taught about robust and unhealthy relationships, it might be easier for an abuser to groom them into believing an abusive affair is normal.

    If Gay young people are unable to obtain information about sex and relationships from school or family, they might pursue advice and back from people in adult spaces, such as gay clubs. This is particularly true of new people who inhabit in rural areas or in communities where their gender identity or sexuality is not recognized. Adult spaces don’t have the matching safeguarding and youngster protection measures in place as spaces specifically for children. Children might be pressured or coerced into doing something they don’t desire to do, particularly if they are already isolated and don’t have anywhere els
